Plotinus
Plotin (en grec ancien : Πλωτῖνος, en latin : Plotinus), né en 205 à Lycopolis et mort en 270 à Naples, philosophe gréco-romain de l'Antiquité tardive, est le représentant principal du courant philosophique appelé « néoplatonisme » : à travers lui, la pensée grecque classique affronte désormais les mouvements gnostiques plus ou moins proches du christianisme et du manichéisme. Continuateur d’un Musonius Rufus, d’un Sénèque, d’un Épictète, Plotin est l’un des grands philosophes de l’époque impériale et un authentique sage de la Grèce. Il installe son école à Rome en 246, où Amélius fut son premier disciple. Sa relecture des dialogues de Platon fut une source d'inspiration importante pour la pensée chrétienne alors en pleine formation, notamment pour Augustin d'Hippone, et elle influença de manière profonde la philosophie occidentale.
