His writing is considered original in that it combines the dramatic and sentimental spirit of Romanticism with a highly personal combination of sarcasm, bitterness and dark humour. Simão Botelho era um jovem de Viseu com um caráter conflituoso e problemático. Um dia apaixona-se perdidamente e mantém um romance em segredo com Teresa de Albuquerque, filha de um inimigo do seu pai, mudando radicalmente de atitude. Ao saber do enlace, Tadeu de Albuquerque promete a mão da filha ao seu sobrinho Baltazar Coutinho. Recusando terminantemente, Teresa é enviada para um convento, onde permanece enclausurada. Simão regressa de Coimbra, onde estava a concluir os estudos, e instala-se na casa de João da Cruz. A filha deste, Mariana, apaixona-se imediatamente por Simão. Numa tentativa falhada de se encontrar com Teresa no convento, Simão acaba por matar a tiro o seu rival Baltazar e é condenado à prisão. O triângulo amoroso desenvolve-se através da correspondência entre Simão e Teresa e das visitas diárias de Mariana. Simão é condenado ao exílio na Índia e, no dia da sua partida, este complicado romance termina da forma mais trágica. Baseado na história real de um tio do autor Camilo Castelo Branco, este é o seu mais famoso romance.
