Chai Rong (also known as Guo Rong or posthumously as Emperor Shizong of Later Zhou) was the second emperor of China's Later Zhou dynasty during the chaotic Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, reigning from 954 to 959 after succeeding his adoptive father/uncle-in-law Guo Wei (Emperor Taizu), whose surname he adopted. He is most famously recognized as one of the most capable and reform-minded rulers of that turbulent era, centralizing military power, implementing economic and agricultural reforms (including land redistribution and tax adjustments), strengthening central authority, and achieving significant military victories against rivals like the Northern Han, Later Shu, Southern Tang, and Liao dynasty—laying crucial groundwork for the eventual unification of China under the Northern Song dynasty founded by his general Zhao Kuangyin (Emperor Taizu of Song). Surprisingly, despite his short reign and premature death at age 37 (likely from illness during a northern campaign), he is often hailed in Chinese historiography as a near-ideal "perfect emperor" or "wise ruler" for his diligence, merit-based governance, and avoidance of the excesses that plagued other short-lived dynasties, while folk traditions later deified him as one of the Gods of Wealth (Southern Road God of Wealth or Chai Wangye), associating his early merchant success and benevolence toward the people with prosperity for traders, kiln workers, and builders.
