Manuel I (European Portuguese: [mɐnuˈɛl]; 31 May 1469 – 13 December 1521), known as the Fortunate (Portuguese: O Venturoso), was King of Portugal from 1495 to 1521. A member of the House of Aviz, Manuel was Duke of Beja and Viseu prior to succeeding his cousin, John II of Portugal, as monarch. Manuel I of Portugal, also known as "The Fortunate" and "The Iron King", was the second son of King Afonso IV of Portugal and his wife Beatrice of Castile. He was born in Coimbra on April 4, 1357, and became king in 1367, when his father died of the plague. Manuel I was a skilled politician and military leader. In 1383, he conquered the city of Ceuta in a campaign against the Moors.
