Jungjong of Joseon was the second son of King Seonjo and was born in 1542. He became king in 1567 when his older brother, King Myeongjong, died. He was only 16 years old at the time. Jungjong's reign was a tumultuous one. He faced many challenges, including a rebellion by his uncle, Prince Jeong-yeon, and the Japanese invasion of 1597. Jungjong died in 1608, at the age of 65.
