Cecilia Renata of Austria was the daughter of Emperor Ferdinand I of the Holy Roman Empire and his first wife, Anna of Bohemia and Hungary. Her parents had married in 1521, but her mother died in 1524. When her father remarried to Anne of Foix-Candale, the daughter of Queen Eleanor of Navarre, she was neglected by her stepmother. Her father died in 1564, and her stepmother became regent for her brother, Maximilian II. Cecilia Renata was a great beauty and was sought after as a bride, but she had to marry the King of Poland, Sigismund II Augustus, who was more than twice her age. She had two children with him and died in 1602.
