Sylvester Turner was most famous for his long career in public service as a Democrat, including serving as the 62nd mayor of Houston from 2016 to 2024—where he led the city through major crises like Hurricane Harvey and the COVID-19 pandemic—and later as the U.S. Representative for Texas's 18th congressional district starting in January 2025, before his sudden death in March 2025 at age 70. Earlier in his career, he represented District 139 in the Texas House of Representatives for 27 years (1989–2016), establishing himself as a key figure on budget and appropriations issues, and he was a Harvard Law School graduate who began as an attorney. Surprisingly, after decades of service and being on the verge of retiring from politics following his mayoral terms, Turner made a late-career pivot to run for and win a congressional seat in 2024—only to pass away just two months into that new role from a medical emergency.
