Charles Louis, hereditary prince of Baden, was born to the ruling family of Baden. He was a grandson of Charles Frederick, Grand Duke of Baden and a great-grandson of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor. In 1792, he became the heir presumptive to the grand duchy. In 1806, he became the reigning prince after his father's death. He was a member of the Confederation of the Rhine and was a vassal of Napoleon Bonaparte. He married Princess Louise of Hesse-Kassel in 1807. He was forced to abdicate in 1811.
