Mustafa Mahmoud was an Egyptian doctor, philosopher, writer, and television presenter most famously known for hosting the long-running TV program Science and Faith (Al-Ilm wal-Iman), which aired hundreds of episodes blending scientific explanations with Islamic faith to affirm God's existence and reconcile modern science with religion, making complex ideas accessible in everyday Egyptian dialect and profoundly influencing generations of Arab viewers. He authored 89 books across philosophy, science, religion, novels, and plays, with his autobiographical My Journey from Doubt to Belief detailing his shift from skepticism (including rumored early atheism and Marxism) to devout faith, alongside works like Dialogue with an Atheist that sparked controversy and legal challenges. Surprisingly, despite facing accusations of atheism from Al-Azhar and even a lawsuit under Nasser for his early provocative writings, he later built a mosque, clinic, and charity complex in Giza (named after him) using earnings from his work, lived simply while donating most proceeds, and received high state honors including the Order of Merit for Science and Arts.
