Tomoko Akane serves as judge at the International Criminal Court for Japan and was elected president of the court for the term 2024–2027. She directed the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders from July 2013 to October 2014 after heading its International Cooperation Department from 2009 to 2010. She was twice deployed to Kenya to train probation officers while attached to the institute.
