Mona Juul is most famously known as a prominent Norwegian diplomat and former Labour Party politician who, together with her husband Terje Rød-Larsen, played a pivotal role in facilitating the secret negotiations that led to the Oslo Accords in 1993—the landmark interim peace agreements between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) that established mutual recognition and laid groundwork for the two-state solution process. Her diplomatic career spanned decades, including postings as Norway's Ambassador to Israel (2001–2004), the United Kingdom (2014–2019), Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York (where she presided over the UN Economic and Social Council in 2020), and most recently as Ambassador to Jordan and Iraq until early 2026. Surprisingly, in February 2026 she resigned from her ambassadorship and faced suspension, revocation of security clearance, and an ongoing police investigation for aggravated corruption after revelations in the Epstein files showed her and her husband's close ties to Jeffrey Epstein—including reports that Epstein's will allegedly bequeathed $10 million to their children and emails indicating social contacts—prompting Norway's Foreign Minister to cite a "serious lapse in judgment" that eroded trust required for her sensitive roles.
