Jacob Frey is most famously known as the Mayor of Minneapolis since 2018 (reelected in 2021 and 2025 for a third term), a Minnesota DFL (Democratic-Farmer-Labor) politician who rose to national prominence during the 2020 George Floyd protests—where he famously refused to commit to defunding the police amid intense pressure—while leading the city through recovery, police reform efforts, affordable housing initiatives, and economic policies as a progressive yet pragmatic leader. He previously served on the Minneapolis City Council (2014–2018) and worked as a civil rights and employment discrimination attorney after a career as a professional distance runner for Team USA. Surprisingly, despite his background as a former elite marathon runner who fell in love with Minneapolis after competing in the Twin Cities Marathon and relocating there, in early 2026 he became a vocal national critic of the Trump administration's "Operation Metro Surge"—a massive federal ICE immigration enforcement operation in the city that caused over $203 million in estimated damages, two fatal shootings of U.S. citizens by agents, and widespread disruption—publicly demanding ICE's withdrawal, urging other mayors to resist federal overreach, and billing the feds for costs while declaring the city's resilience against attempts to "break" Minneapolis.
