Oleg Strizhenov was a legendary Soviet and Russian stage and film actor, People's Artist of the USSR, most famously known for his breakout lead role as the revolutionary Arthur (the "Gadfly") in the 1955 film The Gadfly (Ovod), based on Ethel Lilian Voynich's novel, which catapulted him to stardom as a romantic heartthrob and made him one of the most beloved romantic heroes of Soviet cinema. He gained further acclaim for iconic performances in classics like The Forty-First (1956) as the White officer Govorukha-Otrok (earning a special prize at Cannes), The Mexican (1956), White Nights (1959), and The Star of Captivating Happiness (1975). Surprisingly, despite his dashing on-screen image and career spanning over 40 films, he was often called "the last romantic" of Soviet cinema and died just days after turning 95 in February 2025, having largely retired from acting after the early 2000s.
