Alex Honnold is most famous for his 2017 free solo ascent of El Capitan's 3,000-foot Freerider route in Yosemite—climbing without any ropes or safety gear in what's widely considered one of the greatest athletic feats ever accomplished, later documented in the Oscar-winning film Free Solo. What makes his ability to perform such death-defying climbs even more fascinating is that brain scans have revealed his amygdala, the brain's fear center, shows significantly reduced activity compared to most people, suggesting he may be neurologically wired to experience less fear than the rest of us.
