Gerd Weber won the gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics football tournament with the East Germany Olympic team and played 33 matches for the East Germany national team scoring 5 goals. He began his career with Dynamo Dresden in 1973 and acted as a Stasi informer from 1975 under the codename "Wiehland" delivering more than seventy reports on teammates before his January 1981 arrest ahead of a match in Argentina. After serving eleven months of a two-year-and-three-month sentence for planned illegal border crossing Weber was banned from professional football.
