Emilio Botín was executive chairman of Grupo Santander who oversaw the 1993 absorption of Banesto, the 1999 merger forming BSCH as Spain's largest bank, and the 2004 acquisition of Abbey National that made BSCH the second largest bank in Europe by market capitalisation. Botín and his family settled undisclosed Swiss accounts held since 1937 by paying €200 million after their 2010 discovery by Spanish tax authorities, after which Spain's High Court dropped the tax evasion probe in 2012. Banco Santander received the 2012 Best bank in the world award during his chairmanship and his daughter Ana Patricia Botín was appointed executive chairman after his death.
