Daniel Burros was born to Russian Jewish parents in the Bronx, attended Hebrew school, had a bar mitzvah, and possessed a high IQ of 154, yet became a prominent American neo-Nazi and Ku Klux Klan leader despite his Jewish heritage. He rose to the third-highest position in the American Nazi Party in the early 1960s and later served as the Grand Dragon of the New York chapter of the United Klans of America in 1965, vocally promoting intense anti-Semitism and racism after his military service and involvement with far-right groups like the National Renaissance Party. His life ended tragically on October 31, 1965, when, after a front-page New York Times exposé revealed his Jewish background, he died by suicide—shooting himself twice in the chest and head in front of witnesses at a Klan associate's home in Pennsylvania—reportedly devastated by the disclosure that threatened to destroy his standing in those extremist circles. His story of extreme self-hatred later inspired the 2001 film The Believer.
