Cavalcanti directed the experimental documentary Rien que les heures in 1926 and co-directed Dead of Night in 1945 while producing films such as Went the Day Well? at Ealing Studios. He was expelled from law studies at age 15 after an argument with a professor and later appointed acting head of the GPO Film Unit in 1937. Cavalcanti became head of production for Companhia Cinematográfica Vera Cruz after returning to Brazil in 1950.
