Thomas Tuchel (German pronunciation: [ˈtoːmas ˈtʊxl̩]; born 29 August 1973) is a German professional football manager and former player who is the current head coach of Premier League club Chelsea. As a player, he was a defender. Born in Krumbach, Tuchel's playing career ended at age 25, as a result of a chronic knee cartilage injury; in 2000, he began his coaching career as a youth coach at VfB Stuttgart, and in 2009, following a one-year period at FC Augsburg II, he was hired by newly promoted Bundesliga club Mainz 05.
