Sophia Dorothea of Hanover was the wife of George I of Great Britain and mother of George II. She was born in Hanover, Germany, and brought up in the Lutheran faith. She married George Augustus, Elector of Brunswick-Lüneburg, in 1682. They had two children: George Augustus, Prince of Wales, and Sophia Dorothea, Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg. In 1694, she was divorced from her husband and sent to live in Celle. Her son became George I of Great Britain in 1714.
