Leonard Peltier

Leonard Peltier (born September 12, 1944) is an American indigenous rights activist and an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa, and also of Lakota and Dakota descent. As of 2020, Peltier is one of longest serving political prisoners in the world as he has spent 43 years in prison. In a controversial 1977 trial, Peltier was convicted of aiding and abetting the murder of two Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents who were shot on June 26, 1975, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
