Juhayman al-Otaybi was a Saudi religious extremist, former National Guard member, and leader of a Salafi dissident group most famously known for masterminding and leading the 1979 Grand Mosque seizure in Mecca, where he and up to 600 armed militants stormed Islam's holiest site on November 20, 1979, held it for two weeks, denounced the Saudi monarchy as un-Islamic, and proclaimed one of his followers as the awaited Mahdi (Islamic redeemer) to rally an uprising against the House of Saud. The audacious attack shocked the Muslim world, resulted in hundreds of deaths during the bloody Saudi recapture with foreign assistance, and ended with Juhayman and 68 surviving followers captured and publicly beheaded on January 9, 1980. Surprisingly, despite his radical rejection of Saudi royal legitimacy and modern influences—rooted in his Bedouin tribal background and religious education—his actions inadvertently accelerated Saudi Arabia's shift toward stricter Wahhabi conservatism to counter such threats, influencing the kingdom's religious policies for decades.
